Monica & Omar’s only class at The Tango Club this visit. Los Ocampo are part of Tango history; their teaching, dancing and performing are still relevant today. This class is three hours of Tango essence and will explore how the natural energy and inertia of giros can be transformed into, and from, colgadas to create the continuous flow that is characteristic of Tango Vals.
If you have never attended a class with Los Ocampo you are in for a treat. They are warm, funny and hugely knowledgeable; you will walk away feeling that you have spent an afternoon with realy good friends.

A massive thank you to to the Holiday Tango teaching team: Richard Manuel, and René Hellemons partnered by Jenny Nolan. Really lovely classes, including the intro to contact improvisation. Lovely performance by René and Jenny at the milonga which included really scrummy nibbles – also very late lunch was had by some who suddenly realised the food was good.
More classes tomorrow, more food tomorrow, more dancing, more performances – including 18th century smallsword. The milonga will have a supper, which is free to those who have booked the whole day, otherwise £5 for as much as you can eat.
The usual great welcome and fab hospitality in our lovely loft… see you there!
Holiday Tango returns this August for another bank holiday tang-chill-astic experience!
Those that have been to the two earlier events have loved the mix … relaxed but in-depth delivery in the classes; performance excellence; and the club’s hospitality, warmth and intimacy – set in its lovely, airy but homely loft, and with great food.
The excellent line-up includes once again Richard Manuel (from Midnight Tango and other shows,) joined this time by René & Hiba of Tango Fever. The two day format allows you to follow the teachers’ logic and embody their teaching. Their performances at the milongas add an extra buzz to the evenings. This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in tango and supporting physical practices to deepen your understanding and experience. As with the May event, we include some interesting classes to support your tango – two taster classes for Contact Improvisation and stage fighting with smallsword.
See full details of the teachers and the programme of classes here, where you can also find links for online booking at reduced prices.
A HUGE thank you to Diana Cruz and Nick Jones who made this last weekend absolutely unforgettable.
We started with a milonga on Friday evening and people got a small taste of what was to come, a “simple” class showed Diana & Nick’s technical excellence and generous teaching. Later in the evening they treated us to a lovely performance and we went home expecting the classes the next day would be something special.
We weren’t disappointed; the classes, with a theme of “the free leg” were challenging, precise and a great deal of fun. We were exhausted at the end but in that happy, spaced out way that means it was really good.
While everyone else probably, sensibly, went home and relaxed before Sunday’s events, we went home and prepared to go out. It turned out to be a midnight party on a private boat on the Thames, Diana & Nick were to perform. It was totally mad the way only London can be: astroturf on the boat roof was the social dance floor, a hot tub, all the guests were pirates, mermaids, fish and seaweed; drinks and grapes were served by naked, golden acolytes. The performance space turned out to be the lounge, not a bad space except it had about 60 people crushed into it . I don’t know how but Diana and Nick managed to dance six minutes of the sexiest tango to Bohemian Rhapsody in the smallest space – about 1.5 metres square – but the pirates and their friends loved it. We slipped away in the small hours of the morning, apparently the party went on till seven!
Sunday meant Tango al Fresco, London’s outdoor celebration of tango. The July event had been blessed with good weather for Los Ocampo, was it too much to hope that Diana & Nick could be as lucky? Well, they were. Sunny with a refreshing breeze it was perfect and what a treat. Two fantastic numbers to traditional music, then at the insistance of the crowd a third. Something really special, Sydney Bechet’s “Petite Fleur” and the most sensuous and nuanced dance. Their timing, response and sensitivity was beautiful. If Regent’s Park had a roof it was blown away, the crowd raised it and the cheers could be heard in Diana & Nick’s home in Denver.
Thank you to everyone who came and made the weekend such a great experience.
